Do you have mould on your books? Does your room have that

In moist situations books are an excellent source of food for mould.  As mould takes hold on the paper,  there reaches a point where you can start to smell the mould.  When this happens people will usually say the room smells stale, like "old books", "old" and in one case we were told it smelt like "mice".

Libraries regularly publish their recommendations on how to clean mould like the State Library of Queensland and the State Library of Victoria.

If you have these smells, or can see damaged books start cleaning

There are a number of steps you can take, however, ensure you do not use chemical cleaners that are readily available on the market.  These are harmful to you and the books.

The following cleaning regime is recommended by SAN-AIR as we do not use any toxic chemicals in our products, we use natural plant based ingredients. The efficacy of our products are proven through independent university testing. Have a quick look at this video where the structure of the mould is actively broken down by a drop of SAN-AIR making it ineffective.

  • Keep the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems clean and in good repair.
  • Clean the room from dust on all surfaces including ceilings, walls, floors and furniture. Use SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover to get instant mould removal results, a fresh smelling room and ongoing impact.
  • Clean the books using clean cloths, being sure the deposit the dirt in disposal bags that do not leak. Do not reuse dirty cloths. For badly damaged books you many need to seek specialist remediation services.

Remember, when cleaning, wear appropriate protective gear such as respirator masks and disposal gloves to ensure the mould is not inhaled or retained on your skin.

Mould Prevention is key

To prevent the problem of mould taking hold, one should:

  • store books in well ventilated, low humidity environments
  • ensure any air conditioning equipment and ducting is kept clean so as not to spread mould spores
  • ensure the storage area is clean and dust free, as mould travels in air on dust particles

SAN-AIR Mould Gone is a natural mould prevention product.  It will stop mould from growing  in any indoor environment.  It has been independently proven to stop mould at the roots, preventing its ability to multiply.
